ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Jeda Sky
From a young age, writing music has been a release for Virginia native Jeda Sky. The magic of music was handed down by her music-loving father, a mother and sister who sang, and her brother – who had his own label before he passed away. Citing Eminem as her favorite artist, Jeda draws inspiration from Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, and Lauryn Hill. She listens to — and is excited by – all music genres. Her own music is a melting pot of hip-hop, R&B, and pop. While dynamic artists are a challenge for listeners and industry execs alike, Jeda enjoys being in her own lane.
Fresh off a few performances at SXSW, Jeda is pushing two singles from her upcoming project From Her 2 Me titled “Lift Off” and “Ray.” This debut project is an audio-diary that will serve as the world’s introduction to Jeda Sky, revealing how she came to be who she is, the heartbreaks she’s endured, and offer good times and party vibes.
Jeda’s story is sure to inspire. From beating a felony charge to overcoming financial struggles, her greatest accomplishment is still being here doing what she loves. As an independent artist, you have to stay encouraged and passionate to make it through. Never was this more difficult than when Jeda lost her biggest fan, her mother, in 2013 after a long- and hard-fought battle with breast cancer.
Jeda’s message to people who have been through hardships is that there’s no expiration date on your dreams. As she continues to pursue her dreams, she hopes DCTOP20 can help her reach the masses — the hearts and minds she wants to touch but can’t by herself. In addition to music, Jeda is an actor and screenwriter who penned “Mainstream Flawed”– a story about a female artist determined to stay true to herself while facing pressure to become a sex symbol.
Jeda likes to tell stories. Even if it’s just a party track for the club – listen, because a picture is being painted and the narrative will be an honest one. Jeda’s music reflects her experiences. She’s seen it, done it, been around it, and lived it.
